The Federal Government of Nigeria recently made compliance with the Nigeria Education Repository and Data Park (NERD) mandatory for participation in or exemption from the National Youth Service Corps. While the initiative aims to prevent certificate fraud and improve verification of academic records, many students are concerned that the policy could lead to delays, institutional bottlenecks, and unfair penalties for graduates. We support transparency in education, but implementation must protect the rights and future opportunities of Nigerian graduates.
The Ministry of Education announced that all graduates must comply with the NERD digital repository before being mobilised for NYSC. NERD is designed to digitize and verify academic records nationwide to combat fake degrees and certificate racketeering. However, the policy places heavy responsibility on tertiary institutions and digital infrastructure that may not yet be fully prepared. If universities fail to upload student records or comply with the system in time, graduates could face delays in NYSC mobilisation or exemption. This could affect employment opportunities, postgraduate admissions, and career progression for many young Nigerians.
We call on the Federal Government and education authorities to: Ensure that NERD implementation does not delay NYSC mobilisation for graduates. Provide a clear transition period for institutions to fully comply. Guarantee that students are not penalized for administrative failures by their institutions. Protect the privacy and security of student academic data. Create accessible support systems for students facing NERD verification issues.
