The Crisis in Our Streets: Pollution and Unemployment
Every rainy season in Bauchi, our community faces a recurring nightmare: severe flooding. The root cause isn't just the heavy rains; it is the thousands of discarded plastic bottles, nylons, and electronic waste clogging our municipal drainage systems, creating massive environmental and public health hazards. At the exact same time, we face a human crisis. Bauchi is home to a massive population of brilliant, capable youth and marginalized women who remain underemployed. Without access to formal jobs or digital upskilling, many are forced into the informal waste-picking sector. This work is currently dangerous, analog, highly fragmented, and pays mere pennies. They are doing the hardest work to keep our city clean, yet they are offered no dignity, safety, or path to financial independence. These are two systemic problems destroying our environment and wasting our human potential. But we realized that one problem could actually solve the other.
Our Solution: The SCRAP Circular Model
We founded SCRAP Circular Solutions to transform this environmental liability into a massive community asset. We are not just a cleanup crew; we are building a tech-enabled, circular economy right here in Bauchi. Here is how our "School-to-Scale" model works: 1. School Sorting Hubs: We establish physical recycling hubs in local schools. We provide branded bins and educate students on waste segregation, turning schools into community collection centers. 2. Empowering Green Agents: Instead of leaving waste pickers in dangerous, informal conditions, we onboard marginalized women and unemployed youth as our official "Green Agents." We provide them with safety gear and use accessible digital tools (like WhatsApp) to coordinate their household collection routes. 3. Digital Upskilling: We don't just want to provide a daily wage; we want to build futures. We mandate digital upskilling for our Green Agents, teaching them financial literacy and digital skills so they can manage their new income and build long-term economic independence. We are taking the waste that floods our streets, formalizing the people who collect it, and preparing to process it into high-value industrial raw materials.
